Beginning flute students start out working in the Rubank Elementary Method for Flute and Louis Moyse's Forty Little Pieces in Progressive Order. When you are shopping for the required flute music, it's also a good idea to look for a book of easy songs that will be fun for your child to play. For instance, Disney Greats are always a hit with elementary students. The extra books encourage students to develop their own tastes and to practice for fun - not just for the next lesson. If your child is between ages 6-8, it is strongly advised that you buy a flute with a curved headjoint. Flutes with curved headjoints are easier for smaller children to hold and are currently sold by Gemeinhardt, Jupiter, Armstrong, and Yamaha. They also come with an additional straight (normal) headjoint, which the child can start using once he/she is older. During the first year or two, students can take 30 minute or 45 minute lessons. Once they have progressed to harder music, they should move up to 60 minute lessons. Intermediate and AdvancedMaria also offers lessons for advanced flutists up to college level ability. Advanced flute students study a wide variety of repertoire. The basic, "starter" books include: Melodious and Progressive Studies for Flute, Rubank Advanced Method for Flute, Taffanel-Gaubert's 17 Grand Daily Exercises, Berbiguier Etudes, Andersen Etudes, Handel Sonatas, Bach Sonatas, Flute Music by French Composers, and orchestral flute and piccolo excerpts. Maria's advanced students are currently enrolled in programs at LaGuardia High School of the Arts, Frank Sinatra High School of the Arts, Stuyvesant High School, and the Brooklyn Symphony Youth Orchestra, and many of her former students have gone on to pursue college degress in Music and Arts Administration. In addition, her students often choose to participate in area master classes, studio recitals, and have scored "Excellent" and "Outstanding" ratings on the NYSSMA Flute Test - Levels I-VI. A 45 minute or 60 minute lesson time is recommended for intermediate and advanced flute students. In addition, it is also recommend that advanced students purchase a step-up flute with open holes, a B-foot, and a solid silver headjoint. AdultsAdult students are always a welcome addition to the flute studio, whether you haven't played since high school, or college, want to start a new hobby, or perfect an old one. Adult fltue students are strongly encouraged to pick most of their own repertoire and set their own goals. Additional etudes and scale assigments will also be required, depening on your playing level. Maria has flexible calendar and is able accomodate your busy work schedule. Adults may sign up for 45 minute or 60 minute flute lesson packages. NYSSMAThe New York State School Music Association holds solo adjudication between March and June of every spring semester. Students may enroll in NYSSMA through their school music program. Maria has coached students who have scored very highly on all Levels 1-6. In order to score well at NYSSMA, it is important to make sure that you have chosen approved solo from the NYSSMA manual and begin practicing it at least four months in advanced. Students who are auditioning for All-State must perform with piano accompaniment. Maria knows several pianists who are able to assist students who wish to audition for All-State. Discounts and Rates
