Biography Maria Johnson is a Brooklyn-based flutist and teacher who has appeared at Carnegie Hall (Weill) and Lincoln Center (Fordham), as well as in Italy and China. Maria is available for performances, sessions and flute lessons in the NYC Metro Area.
Her recent performances have been with Opera Mission, Bleecker Street Opera, After Dinner Opera, Opera for Humanity, and Circles and Lines. She is also substitute for One World Symphony and Brooklyn Symphony. Maria holds a M.A. from New York University (2007), where she studied with Gary Schocker. Her private teachers have also included Gordon Cole (University of Kentucky), and Lisa McArthur (Campbellsville University). In addition, she attended classes at NYU with Robert Dick and Keith Underwood. Maria has performed in master classes for Emmanuel Pahud, Jim Walker, Jeanne Baxtresser, Robert Cram, Tadeu Coelho, Roberto Fabbricciani, Rhonda Larson, and John Barcellona. At NYU, she was a winner of the school's annual Wind and Percussion Concerto Competition and performed as a soloist with the NYU Wind Ensemble. She also spent a summer abroad at NYU's campus in Florence, where she studied 20th century repertoire, free improvisation, and extended technique with Roberto Fabbriciani. There she also collaborated with composers from the Conservatorio Cherubini and performed with the NYU New Music and Dance Ensemble under the direction of Esther Lamneck and choreographer Douglas Dunn. Shortly after graduation, Maria was invited to rejoin the University of Kentucky Wind Ensemble for their tour of China. The ensemble performed in Suzhou, Changzhou, and Yangzhou as part of the Olympic Torch Relay Celebrations, and in Beijing, where the ensemble was hosted by the P.L.A. Military Band.
