Biography

Maria Johnson is a Brooklyn-based freelance flutist and teacher. She currently performs with Fear No Frontier Orchestras on 3rd flute/piccolo and has also appeared with Bleecker Street Opera, Opera for Humanity and One World Symphony. In the fall of 2009 she performed in Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall with the New York Classical Orchestra and in the spring of 2009 she performed at Fordham at Lincoln Center with the LA-based indie rock band, Princeton. She holds a B.M. from the University of Kentucky and a M.A. from New York University.

While at NYU she was a winner of the school's annual Wind and Percussion Concerto Competition and performed the Ibert Concert for Flute and Orchestra as a soloist with the NYU Wind Ensemble. She also spent a summer abroad in Florence, Italy, where she collaborated with composers from the Conservatorio Cherubini and performed with the NYU New Music and Dance Ensemble. Shortly after graduation, Maria was invited to rejoin the University of Kentucky Wind Ensemble for their tour of China. She performed in Suzhou, Changzhou, and Yangzhou as part of the Olympic Torch Relay Celebrations, and in Beijing, where the ensemble was hosted by the P.L.A. Military Band.

Her principal teachers have included Gary Schocker and Gordon Cole. Additional studies were undertaken with Robert Dick and Keith Underwood.

In her spare time she enjoys yoga and literature.
